Johnny Hamlet (Die Totengräber warten schon) (LE Mediabook Region B)

$34.99

Along with KEOMA, this film is one of the best westerns Enzo G. Castellari has directed in his career. If the director is to be believed, the idea for this little masterpiece came from none other than DJANGO creator Sergio Corbucci, based on William Shakespeare’s HAMLET, of course

Johnny (Andrea Giordana) returns from the Civil War and learns of his father’s death. Supposedly he was shot by Santana, sneakily. Johnny’s uncle Claudio (Horst Frank) is said to have shot Santana. But Johnny has his doubts about the matter. Also, pieces of Santana’s belt buckle appear in all sorts of places long after Santana’s demise. Johnny sets out with the help of his old friend Horace (Gilbert Roland) to find out what’s up in the bush. Johnny’s mother has since married Claudio, and Johnny’s old lover has committed herself to someone else. Driven by revenge, Johnny and Horace stir up the town and poke around until some feel “disturbed” and want Johnny out of the picture. But he manages to find Santana who is still alive and to uncover the conspiracy, which also involves a few sacks of gold. But now Johnny has his uncle Claudio’s henchmen and Santana’s gang bothering him, and only with the help of Horace and his mother, who also saw through the matter, can Johnny get justice done… (1 Blu-ray + 1 DVD)

Along with KEOMA, this film is one of the best westerns Enzo G. Castellari has directed in his career. If the director is to be believed, the idea for this little masterpiece came from none other than DJANGO creator Sergio Corbucci, based on William Shakespeare’s HAMLET, of course. Castellari’s visual ideas have been developed a lot in this film, most notably the scene where Andrea Giordana is tied to a spinning wheel. Horst Frank probably gave his best western role here, the other actors are also very well chosen, especially Giordana in the leading role and the Mexican Gilbert Roland, who can already look back on a long Hollywood career and here for the second time under this director acted. In addition to the exciting story, the other highlights of the film include the wonderful Spanish landscape, which was captured in this film in the area around Guadix and in the national park of Cuenca (Ciudad Encantada). The whole thing was rounded off by one of the best scores that Francesco De Masi has ever delivered.
