A German high school student, Sonja (Lena Stolze) enters a school essay writing contest on the subject of her town’s history during the Third Reich. During her research, what she finds to her surprise and dismay is that the Catholic clergy and businessmen who she was raised to respect and admire, and who she fervently believed defied the Nazis, did just the opposite. She decides to write a book on her findings and the more she digs, the more she struggles against the town and their opposition to her seeking the truth. Michael Verhoeven’s film won the BAFTA for Best Film In A Foreign Language.
