Grand Star became a hidden gem during its Canadian launch in September 2007 on Space: The Imagination Station. This gripping 26-episode sci-fi series portrays Earth being thrust into an Ice Age in the latter part of the 21st century due to an explosion on the moon. Millions perished, but a few thousand managed to rebuild their lives in railway stations like “Grand Star,” where they are subjected to an iron-fisted tyrant, Ice Corp CEO Palidor (Joe Sheridan, The Ninth Gate), and his henchmen, the Pointsmen, who control all the standard mainstays of life and forbid any research into Earth’s past.
The survivors must learn to endure the frozen landscape, home to strange near-humans of unknown origin, who can withstand the cold, and the “Renewers” that profess the return of the sun. Cal (Tyler Johnston, Supernatural) lives a privileged life on Grand Star with his father, Liam Ragg (Peter Hudson, The Last Duel), who serves as the head Geothermal Scientist for Ice Corp in a covert manner. But, when Cal is struck by an unusual beam of light he believes to be the sun, he’s driven on a path of discovery for the true story of civilization before Ice Corp. Cal enlists his friend Kurt (Kyle Labine, Freddy vs. Jason), and orphaned cabaret worker Suki (Tammy Hui, Battlestar Galactica) on his quest, and soon comes to realize that his understanding may lie with the secret of his family and the “People of the Cold.” The more Cal learns about his background, the more he grasps his powers. Along the way, Cal is hunted by the Pointsmen and their leader Damien (JamesGerard). With time and resources aboard the Grand Star running low, it’s up to Cal to find his truth and restore humanity before all hope is lost!
